A memory slot, memory socket, or RAM slot allows RAM (computer memory) to be inserted into the computer. Most motherboards have two to four memory slots, which determine the type of RAM used with the computer. The most common RAM types are SDRAM and DDR for desktop computers and SODIMM for laptop computers, each having various types and speeds. - My pc contains only 4gb ddr3 ram on 2+2 on two different slots & I want to upgrade it to 2+4=6GB. So there will be 2gb in one slot and 4 gb in another slot. Will there be any problem because of the two different memory (I will buy the same frequency & same manufacturer ram ).
- Having 2 ram slots doesn't affect anything, other than the fact that upgrade options are more limited compared to having 4 slots. Performance will be the same. That said, even the lowest end B250 (Intel) or B350 (AMD) motherboards typically feature 4 ram slots.
- Less heat from 2 modules Vs 4. Performance difference is unnoticeable, you only have 2 channels. And resale value of 32GB sticks is higher. From experience, upgrading 4x4GB to 4x8GB sticks was a pain, had to replace all modules, and sell the old ones. Always good to have just empty slots - decide you want more RAM? Pop in a new module or two.

On top of all that, the exisiting 2x2GB sticks that came pre-installed with the PC 3 years a go stay put - so no need for throwing unwanted memory sticks in a drawer.
Why are the memory slots different colors?
When a motherboard has different colored memory slots, it indicates the memory slots are dual-channel, and pairs of memory should be installed on the same channel (color). For example, a motherboard could have two yellow and two black memory slots. The yellow memory slots could indicate Channel A and Channel B could be indicated by the black slots. If you were only installing two memory sticks, you'd want to install both of them in Channel A (yellow slots) for optimal performance.
